I found on this site the two above images. It didn't take me long to realise that these illustrations where based heavily on these photos. The unfortunate thing in the business is the brevity of deadlines and it is completely understandable to use reference to speed up the process. There are many incredible artists in the industry who regrettable don't have the time to produce excellent works of art that they are more than capable of doing. However the above example is a sad case of referencing. It is painfully obvious that these where used to make the illustrations. It would have been better to mix in some more references and not use the same possion, lighting, and detail.
I thought this one was genius.
